Approximately 55 kilometres west of Melbourne, Bacchus Marsh lies amid picturesque rolling hills and has the advantage of combining country living with easy entrance to the city. The quaint town has an attractive mix of being a friendly place with open spaces, deep gorges, orchards, and lush forests. This obviously makes Bacchus Marsh a wonderful tourist destination including the pristine Werribee Gorge, Brisbane Ranges, Lerderderg Gorge, and the Long Forest Nature Reserve. Visitors are amazed at the beautiful attractions that the town and surroundings hold.
Picture yourself driving through the Avenue of Honour; taking a quiet bush walk; doing some aerial sightseeing, or just observe the wildflowers. The town of Bacchus Marsh itself is situated about halfway between Ballarat and Melbourne in a fertile valley of market gardens, orchards in a lush countryside. During the 1850s, gold was discovered around Ballarat, and a long history of Bacchus Marsh began.
This history is witnessed as you drive from Melbourne into the town through the Avenue of Honour. The main road is lined with oaks, plane trees and elm which were planted to honour World War I soldiers. On entering the commercial centre, Bacchus Marsh displays a mix of modern and historic buildings, including the Tudor-style Border Inn, the Court House, Blacksmith’s Cottage, and churches going back to the 1800s. A wonderful site of history is displayed in the Chicory Kiln, Taverner Street, where chicory roots were roasted before being ground down to be added to coffee. Constructed in 1885, this building has been consistently preserved. Some eye-catching vantage points to view the picturesque sights of the surrounding regions of Bacchus Marsh are off Flanagan’s Drive, set at the top of the eastern end of town. Inspiring sights across the fertile farming land towards the mountain ranges can be observed from the drive round the cross monument.
A wonderful collection of state and national parks and waterways surround Bacchus Marsh, all of which offer opportunities to discover the ranges and scenic gorges through the many bush-walking trails. The Werribee and Lerderderg River, and the historic bridge over the Djerriwarrh Creek have tranquil picnic spots to dream! But if you want to partake in a picnic, BBQ facilities are available at the Merrimu Reservoir. Bacchus Marsh is more picturesque than you can imagine. A feast for the senses, the surrounding air is filled with the fragrance of gums and peppercorns, while the backdrop is filled with fields of picture-perfect market gardens. Bacchus Marsh is a tourist’s delight!
